Single Plane University gives you a complete scoring plan—swing coaching included—so your work finally shows up on your scorecard.
A Personal Letter From Tim Graves, PGA:
"I WON MY TOURNAMENT YESTERDAY!"
— Chris Anderson, May 2026
I want to tell you about one of my students.
His name is Chris Anderson. When I met him at a Single Plane Golf School, he was shooting in the low 90s. He came up to me on the range between sessions and asked: "Tim, how can I get better?"
I looked at him and said: "Get your a** off the range."
Chris had been doing everything right — hitting buckets, filming his swing, grinding on mechanics. But that wasn't his problem. He was practicing golf swing — not golf. He had no short game practice plan. No mental game. No system for scoring. He was working on the hardest part of the game while completely ignoring the easiest strokes to save.
I showed him the data. I walked him through what Graves Golf by Design had revealed about golfers at his level — where the strokes were actually going, what the benchmarks showed, what his real low-hanging fruit was. For Chris, it was clear: short game first.
He changed everything. Shifted to 90% short game, 10% long game. Worked the system. And a few weeks later, he sent me that email you see right there.
That message made my day. Not because it proved the system works — I already knew that. But because Chris trusted it. He got off the range, attacked the right problem, and won.
That's what Single Plane University is built to do for you.
He won because the data told him exactly where to spend his time — and he listened.
That data came from Graves Golf by Design — the system I built from twenty years of statistical analysis across hundreds of thousands of rounds of golf. It's not a feeling. It's not a hunch. It's a complete scoring blueprint, calibrated to your age and your handicap, that tells you precisely which parts of your game are costing you the most strokes — and in what order to fix them.
It's the engine behind everything we do inside Single Plane University. And it's what made Chris's result possible.
The Foundation of Single Plane University
Think of it as your business plan for your golf game.
Using age- and handicap-adjusted benchmarks built from hundreds of thousands of rounds of golf, Graves Golf by Design tells you exactly which areas of your game are costing you the most strokes — and in what order to attack them.
It's not a guess. It's not a feeling. It's a repeatable, data-driven system for lowering your score — and it's the engine that powers everything we do inside Single Plane University.

Here's the truth nobody's telling you...
Practicing swing only is killing your score.
(And your enjoyment.)
Sure, your 7-iron might be pure. Your swing might look great on video.
But you're still shooting the same scores you shot two years ago.
Why?
Because you're practicing the hardest parts of golf—and completely ignoring the easiest strokes to save.
The SPU Difference
Most practice builds technique. Single Plane University builds experience.
Here's what nobody in golf instruction talks about: the difference between knowing something and owning it.
You can watch a video about distance control. You can understand the concept perfectly. But until you've stood over a chip shot with something on the line — a real target, a score, a streak to protect — that knowledge stays theoretical. It doesn't transfer to the course.
That transfer is what SPU is built around. Every drill inside the program is gamified — scored, pressured, competitive. You're not just practicing the motion. You're building the feel that only comes from experience. And you're building it fast.
The Rep Compression Principle
"I'm going to save you thousands of rounds of golf through these pressure tests. The experience you'd earn over a lifetime of playing — you're going to build it here, in structured sessions, with a score in front of you and a coach watching."
— TIM GRAVES, PGA
The Proof
We're not guessing at what moves the needle. The USGA Foundation analyzed over 100,000 rounds of golf to map exactly what separates scratch golfers from everyone else — and the answer might surprise you.
Here's what they found:
The USGA Foundation's analysis reveals something fascinating: improvement happens in predictable, measurable increments.
When you move from a 20-handicap to a 10-handicap, the data shows specific changes: you average 5 fewer putts per round (from 39 to 34), your up-and-down percentage from around the green improves from 45% to 60%, and you hit about 9% more greens in regulation.
Here's what matters: these improvements are not random. They follow clear patterns across hundreds of thousands of rounds. A scratch golfer averages 30 putts per round. A 10-handicap averages 34. A 20-handicap averages 39. Each level has its benchmarks.
Inside Single Plane University, members see detailed comparative charts we've built from this USGA Foundation data. These charts show exactly where scratch golfers, 10-handicaps, 20-handicaps, and 30-handicaps differ across putting, chipping, pitching, greens in regulation, driving accuracy, bunker play, and distance.
This is how we identify your low-hanging fruit. By comparing your Graves Golf by Design Assessment results to these benchmarks, your coach sees immediately which skills are holding you back—and which improvements will save you the most strokes fastest.
Data analysis based on USGA Foundation research of 100,000+ rounds
Now here's where it gets interesting.
Most golfers look at this chart and think: "I need to hit more greens. I need to hit it farther. I need to hit more fairways."
So they spend hours on the range. Working on their swing. Trying to stripe it.
But they're attacking the wrong problem.
Let's say you're a 20-handicapper. You shoot around 92.
Here's what your stats probably look like:
Now, let's do some simple math on where you can save strokes fastest:
Current state: 39 putts per round (20-handicap average)
If you improve to 10-handicap putting: 34 putts per round
Strokes saved: 5 per round
That's it. Just getting better at putting—something you can practice in your living room—saves you 5 strokes.
You didn't change your swing. You didn't add distance. You didn't hit more greens.
You just made more putts.
How realistic is this?
Extremely. Because putting isn't about strength or flexibility or perfect mechanics. It's about:
All of which can be trained progressively with the right system.
Current state: You hit 55% of fairways (20-handicap average)
If you improve to 10-handicap driving accuracy: 60% of fairways hit
Hitting just 5% more fairways might not sound like much, but it means easier approach shots, fewer penalty strokes, and less time searching for your ball.
Strokes saved: 1-2 per round (and a lot less frustration!)
You don't need to swing harder or faster. You just need to hit it straighter.
How realistic is this?
Very. Improving driving accuracy isn't just about raw power. It's about:
Our Driver Optimization course in the Single Plane University Library focuses specifically on these areas, allowing you to hit more fairways without sacrificing distance.
Total: 7 strokes saved per round
You just went from shooting 92 to shooting 85.
Without changing your swing.
Now, we're not saying don't work on your ball striking.
Better ball striking absolutely helps. Hitting more greens means fewer chips and pitches. Hitting more fairways means easier approach shots.
But here's the reality:
Improving your greens in regulation from 41% (20-handicap) to 50% (10-handicap) means you hit about 1-2 more greens per round.
That's maybe 1-2 strokes saved—and it requires significant swing changes, better contact, more distance, and improved accuracy.
Meanwhile, improving your putting saves you 5 strokes. Improving your driving accuracy saves you another 2.
Same outcome. Much easier path.
This is the low-hanging fruit in your game.
Chris Anderson was shooting in the low 90s when he came to me for help. I told him to get off the range and start working on his short game, his mental game, and how to actually score. He didn't win his club tournament off the tee. He hit 5 greens in regulation. He won it with 29 putts and 5-out-of-6 up-and-downs.
"Tim's statistics presentation was VERY eye opening. It took the pressure off me trying to be perfect tee to green. I shifted my practice to 90% short game and 10% long game. Yesterday I WON MY TOURNAMENT."
— CHRIS ANDERSON, Club Tournament Winner, May 2026
| Stat | Result |
|---|---|
| Fairways Hit | 9 |
| Greens in Regulation | 5 |
| Putts | 29 |
| Chips (Up & Down) | 5/6 |
| Pitches | 1/3 |
| Birdies | 2 |
From low 90s shooter... to tournament winner. Same swing. Different game.
The System Behind the Results

Before I became a PGA professional, I was a biostatistician. I was working on my master's degree — even started a doctorate in epidemiology and biostatistics. Numbers have always been how I think.
So when I went through my PGA certification over twenty years ago, my final presentation to a room full of PGA professionals wasn't about swing mechanics. It was about statistics in golf. How to monitor the game. How to use numbers to identify strengths and weaknesses. How to target improvement with precision instead of guessing.
I've been refining that system ever since — through thousands of students, hundreds of schools, and years of feedback from my coaching staff in the field.
Recently, one of my master instructors, Ralph Rabago — who's been coaching for over forty years and teaches multiple sports at a university level — came to me with a problem. He said: "Tim, our students are sending in swing videos, working hard, and still not seeing the improvement they expected. They don't know how to score the game. They don't understand where their strokes are going."
That conversation crystallized everything. Graves Golf by Design was born.
It's a complete scoring blueprint — built from real statistical analysis of hundreds of thousands of rounds of golf, broken down by handicap and by age. Because a 70-year-old scratch golfer doesn't need to hit it 242 yards. They need to hit it 190. Those are completely different targets, and most instruction ignores that entirely.
You start by taking the Graves Golf by Design Assessments — a series of quick, scored games that measure your skill level across every area of your game.
These aren't vague "hit some putts and see how you feel" exercises. These are specific, measurable tests with real scoring. And here's what makes them practical: you don't have to go play a round of golf to get the data. These can be done on the range, on the putting green, on the chipping green — even at home.
Each assessment takes about five minutes. You play a game, score it, and compare your score against the benchmark for your age and target handicap. That's it.
For example:
These aren't feelings. These are numbers.
When you finish, you have a scorecard with real data:
And when you compare your numbers to the age-adjusted benchmarks I built — scratch vs. 10-handicap vs. 20-handicap, at your specific age — you see exactly where you stand.
This is your baseline.
Your coach reviews your Graves Golf by Design results and compares them to the age-adjusted benchmarks — what golfers at your age, at every handicap level, actually score on these same assessments.
They're looking for the biggest gap between where you are and where you should be. Not generic tour stats. Not what a thirty-year-old scratch player does. What someone your age, at your target handicap, actually achieves.
Let's say your assessment shows:
Your coach's prescription:
"Start with Putting 101. Your putting skills are significantly weaker than the rest of your game — you're putting like a 25-30 handicap while you're a 20. That's costing you 6-8 strokes per round. That's your lowest-hanging fruit.
After you complete Putting 101, we'll re-assess and likely move to Chipping 101 next."
The coach isn't guessing. They're using your data — compared against the Graves Golf by Design benchmarks I built over twenty years — to tell you exactly what will drop your scores fastest.
No opinions. No generic advice. Just your numbers, matched against what works at your level.
Now you enter your prescribed Single Plane University program.
Here's how the PROCESS works:
You don't get overwhelmed with information.
Instead, you get one focused training session per day. Each session is 10-15 minutes. Each one builds on the previous day.
Think of it like building your swing: You didn't learn positions 0-6 all at once. You learned position 0, then position 1, then position 2—each building on the last.
SPU programs work the same way.
Here's what happens inside a program:
Each day, you:
Your coach monitors your progress throughout.
You're not doing this alone. Your coach:
Think of your coach as your guide. They prescribed this program because your data showed you needed it. Now they're making sure you actually complete it and get results.
Here's what makes SPU different from random practice:
You don't wait until the end to see if it worked.
Throughout the program, you retake mini-assessments:
Let's say you started Putting 101 making 4 out of 12 hours on the clock drill.
That's not a feeling. That's measurable improvement.
And on the course? You're averaging 35 putts per round instead of 39.
You just saved 4 strokes per round.
After you complete the program, your coach reviews your final assessment.
They compare where you started to where you finished. They look at your new baseline across all Graves Golf by Design Assessments.
Then they prescribe what's next:
"Excellent progress on putting. You improved from below 20-handicap to solid 10-handicap level. Your lag putting especially improved dramatically.
Now let's attack your next biggest opportunity: Chipping 101. Your landing zone accuracy is still costing you 2-3 strokes per round. Let's fix that next."
You move to the next program. The process repeats.
Assess → Prescribe → Train → Re-assess → Adjust.
Apply the Scientific Method to Your Golf Game
This is how you prove you're getting better.
Not a feeling. Not a hope. Real numbers, tracked over time, that show you moving from one level to the next.
Measure. Train. Prove. Simplify. Repeat.
Moe's Secret
"I never practiced what I was good at. I practiced what I wasn't good at. That's how you get better. You gotta be honest with yourself. You gotta know where you stink."
— MOE NORMAN
"Finally, a system that tells me exactly what to work on and when. No more guessing. No more wasted range sessions. My coach keeps me on track and I'm seeing measurable progress every month."
— DAVID L., TEXAS
12 handicap, member for 8 months
Here's why most golfers never improve:
They work on everything at once. A little putting here. A little chipping there. Some swing work. Some driver work.
No focus. No progression. No measurements.
Single Plane University is the opposite.
You focus on ONE area at a time. You train it progressively (just like you learned your swing). You measure your improvement. Then you move to the next area.
This is how you build a complete game.
Not by dabbling. By systematically eliminating weaknesses—starting with the easiest strokes to save.
And here's the beautiful part:
The low-hanging fruit in your game is different from everyone else's.
The system adapts to YOU.
Because we're not guessing. We're using data. We're assessing. We're prescribing based on where YOUR biggest opportunities are.
Moe on Practice
"You don't need to hit a thousand balls. You need to hit one ball a thousand times correctly. Feel it. Learn it. Own it. That's how you groove it."
— MOE NORMAN
There's a reason I once told a student to get off the range entirely. When you're only working on #1 while ignoring the other seven, you're not practicing golf — you're practicing hope.
Most golfers obsess over #1... and completely ignore the other seven.
They beat balls on the range for hours. They film their swing from four angles. They work with a coach on their positions.
Meanwhile, they randomly chip a few balls. Putt until they're bored. Play rounds without any strategy whatsoever.
No plan. No structure. No measurements. No accountability.
Just... hoping it all comes together on Saturday morning.
Here's what that produces:
Two 20-handicappers with completely different games.
Golfer A:
Golfer B:
Same handicap. Totally different weaknesses.
Golfer A is "average" across the board. Improving any area will help—but putting and short game will give the fastest results.
Golfer B can stripe it off the tee but can't putt or chip. Their low-hanging fruit is obvious: putting and short game could save them 8-10 strokes.
Your handicap tells you where you are.
It doesn't tell you what's holding you back.
Single Plane University does.
We assess all eight principles using Graves Golf by Design. Identify your biggest weakness. Then prescribe the exact training program—with a personal coach—to fix it.

"I WON MY TOURNAMENT YESTERDAY! It was a tough course in windy conditions. My short game won it — 29 putts, chips up and down 5 out of 6, and I made long putts to save par and bogey when I needed them. Tim's statistics presentation was VERY eye opening. It took the pressure off me trying to be perfect tee to green. I shifted my practice to 90% short game and 10% long game.
Fairways: 9 | GIR: 5 | Putts: 29 | Chips: 5/6 | Pitches: 1/3 | Birdies: 2
— CHRIS ANDERSON, Club Tournament Winner, May 4, 2026
It started on the range at a Single Plane Golf School. Chris was shooting in the low 90s. He asked me what he should do to improve his scores. I told him to get off the range — stop practicing swing and start playing golf. Short game. Mental game. Scoring. Chris did the work. The data showed him where his strokes were going. The system gave him a plan. His coach kept him on track. Then he won. That's the system.
You're not guessing what to work on.
You're not stuck watching random videos hoping something sticks.
You're not practicing alone without feedback.
