The Foundation of Single Plane University

Graves Golf by Design

Think of it as your business plan for your golf game.

Using age- and handicap-adjusted benchmarks built from hundreds of thousands of rounds of golf, Graves Golf by Design tells you exactly which areas of your game are costing you the most strokes — and in what order to attack them.

It's not a guess. It's not a feeling. It's a repeatable, data-driven system for lowering your score — and it's the engine that powers everything we do inside Single Plane University.

A Personal Letter From Tim Graves, PGA:

Here's what nobody tells you...

Most golfers treat golf like it's only a swing problem.

So they grind on mechanics. Film themselves from four angles. Maybe even hire a coach.

Then they show up on Saturday morning... hoping it all magically transfers to the course.

It doesn't.

We do teach the Single Plane swing—seriously. But we also train what actually decides your score: distance control, short game, putting, strategy, and a weekly structure you can follow.

Because the goal isn't a prettier move on video.

It's a lower number on the card.

Here's the truth nobody's telling you...

Practicing swing only is killing your score.

(And your enjoyment.)

Sure, your 7-iron might be pure. Your swing might look great on video.

But you're still shooting the same scores you shot two years ago.

Why?

Because you're practicing the hardest parts of golf—and completely ignoring the easiest strokes to save.

The SPU Difference

What would take 50 rounds to learn, you'll prove in 30 minutes.

Most practice builds technique. Single Plane University builds experience.

Traditional Practice

  • Hit balls until something feels right
  • No pressure, no consequence, no score
  • Technique that disappears on the course
  • 50 rounds to build real feel and instinct

SPU Pressure Testing

  • Gamified drills with real scoring and stakes
  • Competitive stress that mirrors on-course pressure
  • Feel and instinct built in minutes, not months
  • 30 minutes = what 50 rounds couldn't teach you

Here's what nobody in golf instruction talks about: the difference between knowing something and owning it.

You can watch a video about distance control. You can understand the concept perfectly. But until you've stood over a chip shot with something on the line — a real target, a score, a streak to protect — that knowledge stays theoretical. It doesn't transfer to the course.

That transfer is what SPU is built around. Every drill inside the program is gamified — scored, pressured, competitive. You're not just practicing the motion. You're building the feel that only comes from experience. And you're building it fast.

The Rep Compression Principle

"I'm going to save you thousands of rounds of golf through these pressure tests. The experience you'd earn over a lifetime of playing — you're going to build it here, in structured sessions, with a score in front of you and a coach watching."

— TIM GRAVES, PGA

The Proof

There Is a Science to Lowering Your Score

We're not guessing at what moves the needle. The USGA Foundation analyzed over 100,000 rounds of golf to map exactly what separates scratch golfers from everyone else — and the answer might surprise you.

Here's what they found:

The USGA Foundation's analysis reveals something fascinating: improvement happens in predictable, measurable increments.

When you move from a 20-handicap to a 10-handicap, the data shows specific changes: you average 5 fewer putts per round (from 39 to 34), your up-and-down percentage from around the green improves from 45% to 60%, and you hit about 9% more greens in regulation.

Here's what matters: these improvements are not random. They follow clear patterns across hundreds of thousands of rounds. A scratch golfer averages 30 putts per round. A 10-handicap averages 34. A 20-handicap averages 39. Each level has its benchmarks.

Inside Single Plane University, members see detailed comparative charts we've built from this USGA Foundation data. These charts show exactly where scratch golfers, 10-handicaps, 20-handicaps, and 30-handicaps differ across putting, chipping, pitching, greens in regulation, driving accuracy, bunker play, and distance.

This is how we identify your low-hanging fruit. By comparing your Graves Golf by Design Assessment results to these benchmarks, your coach sees immediately which skills are holding you back—and which improvements will save you the most strokes fastest.

Data analysis based on USGA Foundation research of 100,000+ rounds

Now here's where it gets interesting.

Most golfers look at this chart and think: "I need to hit more greens. I need to hit it farther. I need to hit more fairways."

So they spend hours on the range. Working on their swing. Trying to stripe it.

But they're attacking the wrong problem.

Let Me Show You the Low-Hanging Fruit in Your Game

Let's say you're a 20-handicapper. You shoot around 92.

Here's what your stats probably look like:

  • 39 putts per round
  • 45% up-and-down from around the green
  • 33% up-and-down from 15-50 yards
  • 55% fairways hit
  • 41% greens in regulation

Now, let's do some simple math on where you can save strokes fastest:

SCENARIO 1

Improve Your Putting

Current state: 39 putts per round (20-handicap average)

If you improve to 10-handicap putting: 34 putts per round

Strokes saved: 5 per round

That's it. Just getting better at putting—something you can practice in your living room—saves you 5 strokes.

You didn't change your swing. You didn't add distance. You didn't hit more greens.

You just made more putts.

How realistic is this?

Extremely. Because putting isn't about strength or flexibility or perfect mechanics. It's about:

  • Proper setup and alignment
  • A repeatable stroke
  • Distance control
  • Green reading

All of which can be trained progressively with the right system.

SCENARIO 2

Improve Your Driving Accuracy

Current state: You hit 55% of fairways (20-handicap average)

If you improve to 10-handicap driving accuracy: 60% of fairways hit

Hitting just 5% more fairways might not sound like much, but it means easier approach shots, fewer penalty strokes, and less time searching for your ball.

Strokes saved: 1-2 per round (and a lot less frustration!)

You don't need to swing harder or faster. You just need to hit it straighter.

How realistic is this?

Very. Improving driving accuracy isn't just about raw power. It's about:

  • Proper setup and alignment for the driver
  • Understanding your natural swing path
  • Optimizing your impact for straighter shots
  • Gaining control over your shot shape

Our Driver Optimization course in the Single Plane University Library focuses specifically on these areas, allowing you to hit more fairways without sacrificing distance.

Add It Up:

  • Improve your putting skill from 20-handicap level to 10-handicap level: Save 5 strokes
  • Improve your driving accuracy from 20-handicap level to 10-handicap level: Save 2 strokes

Total: 7 strokes saved per round

You just went from shooting 92 to shooting 85.

Without changing your swing.

Moe Norman's Wisdom

"You know what I say? Practice the short game. That's where the money is. Everybody wants to hit it far. But can you get it close? Can you make the putt? That's the game."

— MOE NORMAN

Now, we're not saying don't work on your ball striking.

Better ball striking absolutely helps. Hitting more greens means fewer chips and pitches. Hitting more fairways means easier approach shots.

But here's the reality:

Improving your greens in regulation from 41% (20-handicap) to 50% (10-handicap) means you hit about 1-2 more greens per round.

That's maybe 1-2 strokes saved—and it requires significant swing changes, better contact, more distance, and improved accuracy.

Meanwhile, improving your putting saves you 5 strokes. Improving your driving accuracy saves you another 2.

Same outcome. Much easier path.

This is the low-hanging fruit in your game.

"I dropped 7 strokes in 6 weeks by focusing on my putting and short game first. My swing didn't change—I just stopped hemorrhaging strokes around the green. This system actually works."

— MICHAEL R., CALIFORNIA

Went from 18 to 11 handicap in one season

This Is Why Single Plane University Exists

Most golfers don't know where their strokes are going.

They think they know. They feel like their putting is "pretty good" or their chipping "needs a little work."

But they don't have the data.

And without data, you're guessing. You're practicing the wrong things. You're spending time on areas that won't move the needle.

Single Plane University eliminates the guesswork.

The System Behind the Results

How We Find Your Low-Hanging Fruit

Graves Golf by Design

Before I became a PGA professional, I was a biostatistician. I was working on my master's degree — even started a doctorate in epidemiology and biostatistics. Numbers have always been how I think.

So when I went through my PGA certification over twenty years ago, my final presentation to a room full of PGA professionals wasn't about swing mechanics. It was about statistics in golf. How to monitor the game. How to use numbers to identify strengths and weaknesses. How to target improvement with precision instead of guessing.

I've been refining that system ever since — through thousands of students, hundreds of schools, and years of feedback from my coaching staff in the field.

Recently, one of my master instructors, Ralph Rabago — who's been coaching for over forty years and teaches multiple sports at a university level — came to me with a problem. He said: "Tim, our students are sending in swing videos, working hard, and still not seeing the improvement they expected. They don't know how to score the game. They don't understand where their strokes are going."

That conversation crystallized everything. Graves Golf by Design was born.

It's a complete scoring blueprint — built from real statistical analysis of hundreds of thousands of rounds of golf, broken down by handicap and by age. Because a 70-year-old scratch golfer doesn't need to hit it 242 yards. They need to hit it 190. Those are completely different targets, and most instruction ignores that entirely.

STEP 1

Assess (Graves Golf by Design Assessments)

You start by taking the Graves Golf by Design Assessments — a series of quick, scored games that measure your skill level across every area of your game.

These aren't vague "hit some putts and see how you feel" exercises. These are specific, measurable tests with real scoring. And here's what makes them practical: you don't have to go play a round of golf to get the data. These can be done on the range, on the putting green, on the chipping green — even at home.

Each assessment takes about five minutes. You play a game, score it, and compare your score against the benchmark for your age and target handicap. That's it.

For example:

  • Putting: Make 10 putts from 6 feet going around the clock. How many hours can you complete before missing two in a row?
  • Chipping: Land 10 chips in a 3-foot landing zone. How many stay in the zone and release correctly?
  • Pitching: Hit 10 pitch shots into a specific landing area. How many finish in the zone?
  • Ball Striking: Hit 10 shots with your 7-iron into a defined accuracy lane at 80% of your distance. How many stay in the lane?
  • Bunker Play: A scoring game that awards points for getting out, getting on the green, and getting up-and-down — weighted by what actually matters at your level.

These aren't feelings. These are numbers.

When you finish, you have a scorecard with real data:

  • 6ft putting: 5 out of 12 hours
  • Landing zone chipping: 3 out of 10
  • Pitching accuracy: 4 out of 10
  • 7-iron lane: 6 out of 10

And when you compare your numbers to the age-adjusted benchmarks Tim built — scratch vs. 10-handicap vs. 20-handicap, at your specific age — you see exactly where you stand.

This is your baseline.

STEP 2

Prescribe (Your Coach Analyzes and Prescribes)

Your coach reviews your Graves Golf by Design results and compares them to the age-adjusted benchmarks — what golfers at your age, at every handicap level, actually score on these same assessments.

They're looking for the biggest gap between where you are and where you should be. Not generic tour stats. Not what a thirty-year-old scratch player does. What someone your age, at your target handicap, actually achieves.

Let's say your assessment shows:

  • Putting: 25-30 handicap skill level
  • Chipping: 25-30 handicap skill level
  • 7-iron accuracy: 20-handicap skill level
  • Driver: 15-18 handicap skill level

Your coach's prescription:

"Start with Putting 101. Your putting skills are significantly weaker than the rest of your game — you're putting like a 25-30 handicap while you're a 20. That's costing you 6-8 strokes per round. That's your lowest-hanging fruit.

After you complete Putting 101, we'll re-assess and likely move to Chipping 101 next."

The coach isn't guessing. They're using your data — compared against the Graves Golf by Design benchmarks Tim built over twenty years — to tell you exactly what will drop your scores fastest.

No opinions. No generic advice. Just your numbers, matched against what works at your level.

STEP 3

Train (Progressive SPU Program)

Now you enter your prescribed Single Plane University program.

Here's how the PROCESS works:

You don't get overwhelmed with information.

Instead, you get one focused training session per day. Each session is 10-15 minutes. Each one builds on the previous day.

Think of it like building your swing: You didn't learn positions 0-6 all at once. You learned position 0, then position 1, then position 2—each building on the last.

SPU programs work the same way.

Here's what happens inside a program:

  • Week 1: You learn the fundamentals (setup, grip, alignment—whatever applies to that skill)
  • Week 2: You learn the mechanics (stroke, motion, technique)
  • Week 3: You learn control and feel (distance, trajectory, touch)
  • Week 4: You learn to apply it under pressure (drills, games, on-course scenarios)
  • Week 5-6: You refine, test, and measure final results

Each day, you:

  • Watch a short training video (5-10 minutes)
  • Do the prescribed drill (5-10 minutes)
  • Optional: Film yourself and send to your coach

Your coach monitors your progress throughout.

You're not doing this alone. Your coach:

  • Reviews videos you send (if you choose to send them)
  • Answers questions via email/text
  • Joins you on live Zoom Q&A sessions
  • Adjusts your training if you're struggling with something

Think of your coach as your guide. They prescribed this program because your data showed you needed it. Now they're making sure you actually complete it and get results.

STEP 4

Re-Assess (Measure Progress Throughout)

Here's what makes SPU different from random practice:

You don't wait until the end to see if it worked.

Throughout the program, you retake mini-assessments:

  • Week 2: Quick check-in. Is the training working?
  • Week 4: Mid-point assessment. How much have you improved?
  • Week 6: Final assessment. Prove your improvement with data.

Let's say you started Putting 101 making 4 out of 12 hours on the clock drill.

  • Week 2: You're now making 6 out of 12
  • Week 4: You're making 8 out of 12
  • Week 6: You're making 10 out of 12

That's not a feeling. That's measurable improvement.

And on the course? You're averaging 35 putts per round instead of 39.

You just saved 4 strokes per round.

STEP 5

Adjust (Your Coach Prescribes Next Steps)

After you complete the program, your coach reviews your final assessment.

They compare where you started to where you finished. They look at your new baseline across all Elite 8 Assessments.

Then they prescribe what's next:

"Excellent progress on putting. You improved from below 20-handicap to solid 10-handicap level. Your lag putting especially improved dramatically.

Now let's attack your next biggest opportunity: Chipping 101. Your landing zone accuracy is still costing you 2-3 strokes per round. Let's fix that next."

You move to the next program. The process repeats.

Assess → Prescribe → Train → Re-assess → Adjust.

Apply the Scientific Method to Your Golf Game

This is how you prove you're getting better.

Not a feeling. Not a hope. Real numbers, tracked over time, that show you moving from one level to the next.

Measure. Train. Prove. Simplify. Repeat.

Moe's Secret

"I never practiced what I was good at. I practiced what I wasn't good at. That's how you get better. You gotta be honest with yourself. You gotta know where you stink."

— MOE NORMAN

"Finally, a system that tells me exactly what to work on and when. No more guessing. No more wasted range sessions. My coach keeps me on track and I'm seeing measurable progress every month."

— DAVID L., TEXAS

12 handicap, member for 8 months

Why This Works: You're Training the Right Things in the Right Order

Here's why most golfers never improve:

They work on everything at once. A little putting here. A little chipping there. Some swing work. Some driver work.

No focus. No progression. No measurements.

Single Plane University is the opposite.

You focus on ONE area at a time. You train it progressively (just like you learned your swing). You measure your improvement. Then you move to the next area.

This is how you build a complete game.

Not by dabbling. By systematically eliminating weaknesses—starting with the easiest strokes to save.

And here's the beautiful part:

The low-hanging fruit in your game is different from everyone else's.

  • Maybe your putting is already solid, but your chipping is terrible. Your coach will prescribe Chipping 101 first.
  • Maybe your short game is great, but you can't hit a fairway wood to save your life. Your coach will prescribe Fairway Woods and Hybrids.
  • Maybe you hit it well but have no course management skills. Your coach will prescribe Course Management 101 or Playing School.

The system adapts to YOU.

Because we're not guessing. We're using data. We're assessing. We're prescribing based on where YOUR biggest opportunities are.

Moe on Practice

"You don't need to hit a thousand balls. You need to hit one ball a thousand times correctly. Feel it. Learn it. Own it. That's how you groove it."

— MOE NORMAN

Golf Has Eight Scoring Principles That Determine What You Shoot

  1. 1.
Ball striking — Full swing mechanics and contact quality
  2. 2.
Short game — Chipping, pitching, and bunker play
  3. 3.
Putting — Where 40%+ of your strokes happen
  4. 4.
Practice habits — What you do determines what you can do
  5. 5.
Course management — Strategy, shot selection, and decision-making
  6. 6.
Equipment — Properly fit clubs make execution easier
  7. 7.
Mental game — Focus, confidence, and emotional control
  8. 8.
Fitness — Your body's ability to execute the swing

Most golfers obsess over #1... and completely ignore the other seven.

They beat balls on the range for hours. They film their swing from four angles. They work with a coach on their positions.

Meanwhile, they randomly chip a few balls. Putt until they're bored. Play rounds without any strategy whatsoever.

No plan. No structure. No measurements. No accountability.

Just... hoping it all comes together on Saturday morning.

Here's what that produces:

Two 20-handicappers with completely different games.

Golfer A:

  • Averages 39 putts per round (20-handicap average)
  • Gets up and down 45% of the time chipping (20-handicap average)
  • Hits 55% of fairways (20-handicap average)
  • Shoots 92

Golfer B:

  • Averages 42 putts per round (worse than 20-handicap)
  • Gets up and down 38% of the time chipping (worse than 20-handicap)
  • Hits 60% of fairways (better than 20-handicap)
  • Shoots 92

Same handicap. Totally different weaknesses.

Golfer A is "average" across the board. Improving any area will help—but putting and short game will give the fastest results.

Golfer B can stripe it off the tee but can't putt or chip. Their low-hanging fruit is obvious: putting and short game could save them 8-10 strokes.

Your handicap tells you where you are.

It doesn't tell you what's holding you back.

Single Plane University does.

We assess all eight principles using Graves Golf by Design. Identify your biggest weakness. Then prescribe the exact training program—with a personal coach—to fix it.

You work through programs with your coach at your own pace. If a new program releases and you're still working on a previous one, that's fine. All programs remain available to you.

Q: Can I choose which program to start with?

Your coach will recommend which program to start with based on your Graves Golf by Design Assessments—but ultimately, you decide. The goal is to work on what will lower your scores fastest.

Q: What if I'm not a Single Plane golfer yet?

Single Plane University is designed for members who understand the Single Plane swing basics. If you're new to Single Plane, we recommend starting with our foundational programs first.

Q: Is there a limit to how many students you accept?

Yes. We can only accept a limited number of new members because each student requires intensive personal coaching. When we reach capacity, enrollment closes until spots open up.

Our Guarantee

We guarantee you will be surprised by what you find.

When you go through the Graves Golf by Design assessments, you will discover strengths you didn't know you had — and weaknesses you never suspected were costing you strokes. That's not a pitch. That's a promise.

Follow the system. Work with your coach. Attack the areas that the data identifies. And if you do the work and don't see measurable improvement — we want to hear from you.

Your progress is measurable. Your coach is accountable. And so are we.

"The numbers don't lie. You'll know exactly where you are, exactly where you need to go, and exactly what to do next. That's the business plan for your game — and I stand behind it."

— Tim Graves, PGA

Moe's Final Word

"Golf is simple. People make it complicated. Find what works, practice it, stick with it. Don't chase every new thing. Build your game one piece at a time."

— MOE NORMAN

P.S.

You can try these programs alone for $1,000 each, but you need feedback from a real, experienced coach to maximize results and save time. Just 3 à la carte programs = $3,000—the same as an entire year of membership with unlimited coaching, unlimited SP30, and all future programs included.

P.P.S.

We've seen members improve their handicap by 5-8 strokes in just 40 days with proper training. Not random practice. Progressive training with a coach guiding you every step.
